Las Vegas Tax Preparer Sentenced to 38 Months in Federal Prison in $5 Million IRS Refund Fraud Scheme

LAS VEGAS, NV — On October 21, 2026, Ivan Odiaga was sentenced to 38 months in federal prison for conspiring to defraud the United States. Odiaga, a Las Vegas tax preparer, was involved in a scheme that involved filing numerous fraudulent tax returns and diverting more than $1.1 million in illicit refunds to personal accounts. This sentencing was announced by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Nevada and the Department of Justice’s National Fraud Enforcement Division.

Odiaga operated through Silver State Tax & Multiservices LLC with his mother, Iris Hondermann. Between the years 2017 and 2021, they submitted false client returns to the IRS, unjustly claiming over $5 million in refunds. Their fraudulent activities included creating fictitious deductions and stealing the Preparer Tax Identification Number of another tax professional to file around 279 false returns. Hondermann is currently serving a 30-month federal prison sentence after pleading guilty to conspiracy.
