Nevada has recently taken a significant legal step by suing the federal government, specifically targeting the Department of the Interior’s new directives for managing Lakes Mead and Powell. This lawsuit, brought forth alongside the Colorado River Commission of Nevada and the Southern Nevada Water Authority, aims to address drastic potential reductions in Nevada’s Colorado River allocation, which is already the smallest at 300,000 acre-feet per year.
Despite Southern Nevada’s commendable efforts in water conservation, which surpass those of any other state in the basin, the proposed plan could result in a staggering cut of over 70 percent to its water allocation. This imbalance is concerning, especially as Upper Basin states are not facing mandatory reductions. The effort to ensure fairness in allocation and the health of the river ecosystem is at the heart of Nevada’s challenge.
