Nevada takes back $52 million for rural broadband amid fears of missed spending deadline

Nevada has retracted $52 million in pandemic relief funds designated for enhancing broadband access in rural regions as a federal spending deadline nears, impacting statewide high-speed internet initiatives.

With only three months remaining to allocate its total of $2.7 billion in pandemic relief funds, state officials were informed by contractor Stimulus Inc. that it could not complete essential broadband connections in the Pahrump area by the deadline. Consequently, certain parts of Pahrump will not be included in the ongoing broadband buildout, raising doubts about the project that aimed to serve as a central hub for future expansions.

While the exact unserved areas remain unclear, northern Pahrump is anticipated to face significant implications. Britta Appel, director of the Governor’s Office of Science, Information, and Technology, noted that the decision was difficult and stemmed from various challenging circumstances.

The reallocated funds account for over a quarter of the more than $200 million initially designated for broadband projects, now redirected towards various programs, including mental health care support in jails and initiatives to combat food insecurity and foster multifamily housing development.

Despite past assurances regarding timely fund allocation, the retraction highlights ongoing struggles in addressing rural digital access, further complicated by federal fund rescissions and various funding sources. Appel acknowledged uncertainties about when and how broadband might reach affected areas in the future.
