The circulation statistics for the Las Vegas Review-Journal were disclosed in their edition dated October 4, 2026, revealing an average daily paid circulation of 50,025 for both print and digital. To put this in perspective, the entire subscriber base could fit within Allegiant Stadium, which has a capacity of 65,000, while nearly 15,000 seats would remain unoccupied. Over the last decade, the newspaper has experienced a staggering decline of almost 80% in circulation.
Within the past year alone, the Review-Journal has seen a drop from 53,525 to 50,025, marking a decline of roughly 6.5%. This was buried deep in their classified ad section, highlighting the urgency and hesitation surrounding these figures. While there was a minor increase in digital subscriptions from 23,253 to 23,877, the overall trend remains concerning as the paper struggles against a backdrop of evolving media consumption and diminishing trust.

I miss the Las Vegas Mercury. It was the last good rag.

I saw that too. The math doesn’t math. $3+ a day for a newspaper? The paper is also published 364 days a year? What day to they take off?

Fair.

Newspapers play a vital role in our country’s history. I don’t have 15 minutes for my many tangents on the subject. The problem with the “free press” is that it’s not free. It costs a lot of money to produce any newspaper, and we all want free access to the free press, thanks to the internet. Toothpaste out of the tube… newspapers will never recover from the shift to that free internet we all pay plenty for to access every day of our lives. LVRJ is as guilty as almost every newspaper in this country. It’s not a charity, it’s not a nonprofit. Plenty of people made money off the free press, for better or worse. That’s not a thing any more, and we’re left with papers that are a shell of them former selves, if even that. LVRJ is more than guilty. Scott is off the mark in his ax grinding, but I can look past that.

I dislike RJ as much as the next guy but let’s face it, they are no different than most every newspaper in the country. In the 00’s over 1 out of 3 newspapers are not even in business anymore.

Doesn’t matter anyway because local News consist of only several things: 1. New Hot Dog Stand on the Strip!! 2. New Hamburger Stand on the Strip!! 3. Pedestrian Hit Outside a Marked Crosswalk!! 4. A Shooting Somewhere Here!! 5. Vehicle Crash on I-215 & I-15…and other places!! 6. E-Bikes!!! The Industry created the problem…WHO’LL FIX IT???!!! Oh yeah…7. F1 TEARS UP THE STRIP AGAIN!!!!! (There…that Info was FREE!! 🙂 NEXT!!! The End

When I first got to town 20 years ago, the R-J was actually one of the better local newspapers I’d read. Today’s version makes me sad. And yeah, I get that they lost all of their advertisers in the interim. And I know some people are skeptical of the Adelsons (why?), but who else would be willing to put $10M a year into a failing newspaper?
I hope the R-J is having meetings this morning about how to enact nearly all of your suggestions.

You missed an important point in the legal notice. It shows the subscription is $1,157 a year. That could help explain why people don’t want to buy it.

Good Lord… don’t give them any ideas! (They’ll just steal them without giving credit anyway.) Let them flounder and flail as they have a for a decade. They can continue to burn thru Shelly’s money til it dies a slow painful death.
But one question, no mention of the LV Sun? Are they on the same path as the LVRJ after they lost the lawsuit?
And how about a shout out to some decent Las Vegas news outlets that are doing a decent job like the Nevada Independent…others?

Despite these struggles, I hear they are favored to win Best Newspaper when the Best of Vegas awards are announced

What about Las Vegas Advisor? They were so arrogant and proud to go entirely pay-walled awhile back. No more little freebies like “Question of the Day” that gave me a few moments every day to at least think of Vegas. But of course Curtis knows best. And you know what, I haven’t been to LV since before the pandemic. No more trips means no more stops at LVA to buy a box of books at least once a year.
