Las Vegas: A New Destination for Cuban Migrants Seeking Opportunity

Recent data indicates a growing trend of Cuban migrants choosing the Southwest over traditional destinations like Miami, with economic opportunities driving this migration.

'An opportunity for us to prosper': Why Las Vegas is becoming a magnet for Cubans

Recent data indicates a growing trend of Cuban migrants choosing the Southwest over traditional destinations like Miami, with economic opportunities driving this migration. Dennis Martinez Miranda, a chef at Cubanidad 1885, relocated to Las Vegas from Miami to start his own restaurant with business partners, realizing a long-held dream.

Martinez Miranda is among many Cubans finding new prospects in Nevada, which now holds the second highest share of Cuban migrants in the nation, according to a Nevada Independent analysis of U.S. Customs and Border Protection data. Changes in U.S. immigration policies and deteriorating economic conditions in Cuba are contributing factors to this shift, as highlighted by Valerie Lacarte from the Migration Policy Institute.

She emphasizes that the ending of the “wet foot, dry foot” policy in 2017 has facilitated a channeling of Cuban migrants through Central America and Mexico, leading to a diversification of locations where Cubans settle. The vibrant community here in Las Vegas mirrors that of Miami, surprising many newcomers like Martinez Miranda.
