Grades, overreactions from UC Bearcats late loss at West Virginia

MORGANTOWN, WV – On October 17 at Milan Puskar Stadium, the Cincinnati Bearcats found themselves on the losing end of a dramatic game against the West Virginia Mountaineers, finishing 45-42. Despite outperforming WVU in several statistical categories, including possession time, total yards, and passing yards, it was the Mountaineers who seized the final possession to claim victory. Cincinnati managed to pin West Virginia at their own 1-yard line following a punt by Max Fletcher, but an impressive 41-yard completion on a critical 3rd-and-9 by West Virginia quarterback Michael Hawkins Jr. ultimately allowed them to set up a winning 35-yard field goal.

Throughout the game, Cincinnati experienced six leads, yet they could not secure a win. Despite gaining 622 total yards compared to West Virginia’s 598 and limiting their rushing yards to 134, Hawkins Jr. thrived against the Bearcats’ defense, throwing for 464 yards. Coach Scott Satterfield highlighted the deficiencies in their pass defense, noting that they needed tighter coverage to prevent big plays. As the Bearcats head into their next matchup against Texas Tech, they face an uphill battle with several ranked opponents ahead.
