Unresolved Justice: The Prolonged Process of a 2017 Las Vegas Sexual Assault Case

The 2017 allegations of sexual assault in Las Vegas have resurfaced, raising concerns about the system's effectiveness in delivering justice for victims.

OPINION: Why is this 2017 Las Vegas sexual assault case taking so long to come to trial?

The 2017 allegations of sexual assault in Las Vegas have resurfaced, raising concerns about the system’s effectiveness in delivering justice for victims. This case gained renewed attention due to the aftermath of a scandal involving untested rape kits at the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.

On February 2, 2017, a woman reported to the police that she had been raped the previous night after a night out at Town Square. Although she provided cooperation and crucial evidence, including testimonies and DNA, the case inexplicably stalled for years. In 2022, cold case detectives revisited the file, culminating in a grand jury indictment in January 2023, charging three individuals with multiple sexual assault and kidnapping counts. Unfortunately, one defendant passed away, another was declared incompetent to stand trial, and a third faces further delays, raising questions about the delay of justice in this case.
