As challenges within the Clark County School District persist, more families are contemplating the shift to homeschooling. Parents express concerns about fluctuating bell schedules, unreliable transportation, and extended school hours, leading them to question the traditional school environment.
Ashley Matthews, a parent with a sixth-grader, highlights her son’s lengthy daily routine, which begins around 5 a.m. and often has him returning home around 4 p.m. This reality has Matthews considering her role, contemplating whether to modify her work commitments to teach her son at home. Meanwhile, Chelsea Denbow, who has homeschooled for eight years after her son’s school zoning changed, emphasizes her dissatisfaction with the district’s educational direction and the lack of parental influence on schooling decisions. This shift comes at a time when CCSD is seeing a significant drop in student enrollment, with 10,400 fewer students reported compared to the previous year.
