A busy roadway in North Las Vegas, Nevada, faces a potential reduction in its length to accommodate upcoming expansions at North Las Vegas Airport. According to the airport’s Final Master Plan Report, roughly half a mile of Carey Avenue, situated between Simmons Street and Allen Lane, is slated for permanent closure as the facility looks to enhance its runways.
This initiative aligns with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations and anticipates future aviation demands over the next two decades. As one of two FAA-designated National Reliever Airports in Nevada, the airport serves various aviation purposes, offering alternatives to Harry Reid International Airport. An airport representative stated the necessity for the runway extension, highlighting that rerouting Carey Avenue emerged as a requirement for all options evaluated.
The proposed closure would impact over 13,000 daily motorists, with traffic forecasts indicating a 23% increase by 2050. In the event of the closure, alternate routes will direct traffic to nearby streets, including a connector road linking Carey Avenue to Lake Mead Boulevard, where approximately 59% of diverted traffic is expected to travel. Despite traffic studies projecting no significant rise in overall travel times, some residents express concerns about increased congestion in the area.
